God's Design for Men

DAY 4 OF 30

Royal Men

Every little boy begins to daydream about what he will be when he grows up.

A policeman? A farmer? A teacher? A professional athlete, probably?

Will he get married? Be a father? Be a leader? Make lots of money?

The deep question of “Who am I?” grips us from the earliest of ages, and most men still grapple with it well into adulthood.

It gets at the core of a man’s sense of identity—his way of framing who he is, his purpose, and his place in this world.

Many men tend to answer that deep question in terms of their family and their job. “I am a husband, father, and construction worker.”

And while those are parts of a man’s identity, there is an answer to that deep question, shown in today’s verses, that is far more important for every man to understand about himself:

“I am a son of God.”

First and foremost, we belong to Him. That is who we are.

Core to biblical masculinity is to understand that you are created by God on purpose, deeply loved by God, forgiven and redeemed by God because of what Jesus did through His Cross and Resurrection, and invited to a seat at God’s family table for all eternity.

Jesus, the perfect Man, knew He was God’s Son, and that His Father loved Him, and He walked in that love all His earthly days (Matthew 3:17). He then proved God’s love for us by dying for us (1 John 3:16).

Men can appreciate that something’s value is determined by the price one is willing to pay for it. The more valuable something is, the more someone is willing to pay.

Your value as a man was determined by the price Jesus was willing to pay for you; His death on your behalf demonstrates how ridiculously much you are loved.

Men are at their best when this truth is deeply embedded in their sense of identity and becomes the driving force behind everything they do.

God’s design for men is for them to know His love and lean into their calling as His sons, trusting their heavenly Father’s goodness and resting in His grace.

Prayer: Father, I am grateful that I am Your son! Thank You for the great love You have shown me through Jesus and for inviting me into Your family! There are many things that make me “me” and many titles and activities that help define me, but may my identity as Your son always be the most important one of all. Amen.

Reflection: What parts of your identity get the most attention? What would it mean to deepen your understanding of your identity as a son of God?

About this Plan

God's Design for Men

The term "toxic masculinity" has been used to call out men's sinful behavior, but it doesn’t inspire men to greater things. We need a vision of masculinity that is good, biblical, and Christ-like—God’s ideal design for men, all that He wanted them to be when He created them as men on purpose. Jesus, the perfect Man, shows us a perfect picture of what masculinity was meant for. God’s Son shows us what men should be aiming at, and God’s Word shows us how to get there in this 30-day devotional! Written by Chris Walker.
