Fully Loved, Fully Known: Known by God. Loved Without Limits.

DAY 4 OF 5

After years of wishing I could be someone else, feeling trapped in a life I didn’t want, here’s what I’ve discovered: your uniqueness is the clue to your calling.

I’ll never forget one moment in my early thirties. I was studying for my master’s degree at the University of Liverpool, sitting silently in a group discussion, when a fellow student snapped: “Mary, you’re not saying anything. You’re not contributing!”

As I shrank with embarrassment, another student jumped in: “Mary may not say much, but when she does, you’d better listen – because it’s usually important.”

I was stunned.

Not long after, at Christmas dinner with my pastor’s family, someone teased me for being quiet. Without missing a beat, my pastor said, “Leave Mary alone. She’s a thinker.”

Those two simple statements were life changing for me. For the first time in my life, I felt affirmed. Personal qualities I’d always been led to believe were negative, suddenly had value. I began to see myself in a new light.

That’s when I realized something powerful: God leaves clues to your calling. Often, those clues show up in the very traits you’ve overlooked, undervalued, or even wished away.

For years, I second-guessed my ideas, worried about what people thought, trying to please everyone. I lived small. When I stopped holding back, I began to step into opportunities I never imagined – all flowing from what once made me feel inadequate.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are God’s masterpiece, designed for good works He planned long ago. Jeremiah 1:5 says God set us apart before we were even born. Psalm 139 reminds us He knit us together in the womb intentionally. Nothing about you is accidental. Your personality, gifts, strengths are all part of His plan. They are clues to your God-given calling.

Sometime ago, after I delivered a keynote speech to a large audience of businesspeople, an executive who had grown up in my neighborhood came up to the microphone: “I can’t believe it. Mary used to be so quiet! She never left the house!”

And she was right. But by God’s grace, the silenced girl has found her voice. The truth about who I am has set me free (John 8:31 – 32).

A popular quote says: “Everyone is born an original, but sadly most die as copies.” Don’t waste your life wishing you were someone else. Start seeing your uniqueness as God’s gift. He didn’t create you to be a copy: He created you to be an original.

There’s no one better at being me than me.

There’s no one better at being you than you.

Prayer
Thank You, Heavenly Father, for making me Your masterpiece. Help me to recognise the clues You’ve left in my uniqueness and give me the faith to believe what You say about me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Tomorrow we’ll see just how much God delights in you and thinks about you constantly.
