God Is Able to Give Courage Under Fire
“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” (Daniel 3:16–18)
It is one of the most well-known stories in Scripture: King Nebuchadnezzar constructed a massive golden idol and commanded everyone in his kingdom to worship it. When the music played, leaders from across the empire bowed in submission—all except three young men from Israel. Their jealous accusers quickly reported them to the king, and they were summoned before him. Nebuchadnezzar offered them a second chance, promising to spare their lives if they would bow. But they refused. Indeed, there is no proper way to mix the worship of God with the worship of anything else. He must be first and only. As Exodus 20:3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
The threat these three young men faced was real. The furnace stood before them. A simple act of compromise could have saved their lives. But they declared their allegiance to God, not knowing whether He would deliver them or allow them to suffer. They trusted His power, but they also trusted His will. They knew one thing for certain: God was worthy of obedience no matter the outcome.
Most of us will not face a literal furnace and fiery death, but we are often pressured to compromise our convictions and soften our faith. In those moments, we are not left to rely on our own strength. God is able to give courage under fire. The same God who stood with these men in the flames is still able to strengthen His people when they stand for truth today.
Today’s Takeaway: When we are challenged and tested, we can rely on God for the strength and courage to stand for Him and for truth.
