When Authority Is Tested

Authority is not truly activated until it is tested.

God entrusted humanity with dominion, but for that authority to be genuine, it had to be chosen. The tree in the garden was not a restriction—it was a test of trust. Would humanity walk by faith in God’s Word, or by sight and self-reasoning?

The serpent’s strategy has never changed. First, he questioned God’s Word. Then he appealed to what looked good, felt good, and promised wisdom. The test was simple but profound: faith before knowledge. Trust before control.

Adam and Eve didn’t just eat fruit—they transferred allegiance. When they chose independence over obedience, dominion became domination. Disorder followed, not because God failed, but because alignment was broken.

This same test still confronts us today. Temptation often comes disguised as legitimacy: meeting real needs in illegitimate ways, seeking shortcuts to God’s promises, or trusting our feelings more than God’s Word. The enemy doesn’t tempt us to make us happy—he tempts us to steal our authority.

Yet failure was never the end of the story. God’s grace anticipated humanity’s fall, and redemption was already in motion.

Tomorrow, we’ll see how Jesus faced the same test—and passed it—restoring what was lost and reclaiming authority for us all.

Identify one temptation today and respond to it by declaring God’s Word out loud.

God, help me trust You above what I see or feel. Strengthen my obedience and anchor me in Your truth. I choose faith over compromise. Amen.
