DAY 11 OF 17

READ Psalm 46:1-11.

The psalmist lets us know that we need to look in three directions (3D) as we take shelter in the Lord. We are to look back, look around, and look forward.

LOOKING BACK: The psalmist wants us to remember that God has a track record in history of providing for His people. Notice how God is referred to in this psalm. He's referred to as the God of Jacob. Who was Jacob? Jacob had another name: Israel. And, Jacob lived about a thousand years before the time of King Hezekiah. So, Jacob is not a contemporary of Hezekiah. But when the son of Korah, in Hezekiah's day, writes this psalm, he refers to God as the God of Jacob, pointing their eyes backward to remember God's provision for His people consistently over time. We are inspired to believe that God is a help in the midst of a storm, when we remember God's faithfulness in the past.

LOOKING AROUND: The Psalmist wanted them to look around and see what God was doing right there in their day. Psalm 46 was written right after the siege from the Assyrians.During the siege, the people of Jerusalem felt like the earth was caving in on them, but the Psalmist reminds them that when God spoke the word, the fight was over.In 46:5, the Psalmist talks about the help the Lord will bring to Jerusalem in the morning. This actually happened in Isaiah 37:36 when the nation awoke to see that the Lord struck down the Assyrian army and won their freedom. We are inspired to trust the Lord when we see what He is doing around us today.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Psalmist also wanted them to look forward to what God would do. There are aspects of what is talked about in this psalm that have not yet happened. It says, He makes the wars cease to the end of the earth. Now here's the question. Has God made the wars to cease to the end of the earth yet? No … but He will one day! We are inspired to trust in the Lord today when we remember what He has promised to do tomorrow.

Prayer: Lord, may we see Your faithfulness in 3D, as we look in all directions, backwards, around, and forward. Amen.
