Practice over Passion
At the beginning of most relationships, passion and emotion are the driving force. We’re excited, anxious, and curious as we get to know someone new. The anticipation we feel as we face the unknown motivates us to move forward. The excitement of a new adventure keeps us on the path of pursuit, and we look toward the unknown wide-eyed and full of hope.
At some point, those electric feelings fade. We settle into familiarity as the newness and excitement wear off. If we haven’t built a firm foundation, we’ll struggle to maintain that relationship. A passionate start is great, but it doesn’t guarantee the longevity of the relationship. Passion alone cannot sustain the demands of everyday life or the pressures of trials and suffering. Passion must push us to develop healthy habits so a deeper, more sustainable relationship can be created.
This is true in your relationships with others as well as your relationship with God. In the early days of your walk with Him, you may have lived off spiritual highs. Everything you learned was new, and you soaked up truth like a sponge. While passion is beautiful, it can’t sustain your walk with God long-term. Eventually, you will be forced to rely on more than your emotions.
It’s important to intentionally develop habits and practices that promote lasting depth and intimacy. A foundation of truth will carry you further than fleeting feelings or emotions. Developing spiritual muscles is a lot like digging a well. The well doesn’t feel necessary in seasons of abundant rain, but when drought comes, you’ll be grateful for the work that is already done.
How can you lay a solid foundation in your relationship with God? The most obvious answer is to spend time with him. Don’t underestimate the value of sharing everyday moments with Him. Invite Him into your day and commit your plans to Him. Listen for His voice along the way and acknowledge His faithful presence. Spend time memorizing the Word and let the truth impact every part of your life. Prioritize God’s presence and His Scriptures, and your well will never run dry.
