What Does It Mean to Be Human?

DAY 9 OF 21

The return: Remembering relationship

Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom to remember who we truly are. The younger son, broken and hungry, “came to himself” and recalled the goodness of his father. He didn’t simply remember the food he had wasted or the pleasures he had pursued – he remembered the love and care he had left behind. This moment sparks repentance, a turning of the heart back toward the one who knows and values him most.

God’s grace meets us in the same way. While we are still far off, He runs toward us. In the story, the father doesn’t wait for an apology; he restores fully, giving robe, ring, and sandals – symbols of dignity, sonship, and belonging. God’s love is unconditional, initiating, and restorative. It doesn’t depend on our merit or readiness; He comes first, embracing us with compassion and joy.

Even when we fail or wander away, our significance and identity in Christ remain secure. Grace does not merely forgive; it restores, reconnects, and invites us back into intimacy with God. Every moment of repentance opens the door to renewed belonging and purpose.

Reflection:
Where do I need to turn back to God’s presence today? How can I receive His restoration and walk in His love, remembering my true identity as His child?

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for pursuing me even when I stray. Help me receive your grace and restoration, and remind me that I am fully loved, accepted, and welcomed home in you. Amen.

About this Plan

What Does It Mean to Be Human?

What does it mean to be truly human? In a world obsessed with success, appearance and achievement, it’s easy to forget that our worth is not measured by what we do, own or accomplish. Journeying through Genesis, Psalms, the gospels and Daniel, this 21 day devotional series will bring you back to a simple truth: we are made in God’s image, deeply loved, and created with purpose.
