What Does It Mean to Be Human?

DAY 1 OF 21

Being human: Made in God’s image

What does it mean to be human? It’s a question echoed across cultures, generations, and disciplines. Philosophers, scientists, and storytellers define humanity by intelligence, achievement, or status. Advertisements suggest our worth depends on appearance, possessions, or performance. But such definitions are fleeting and fragile.

The Bible gives us a radically different answer: we are made in the image of God. From the very first chapter of scripture, God declares that humanity is intentional, designed, and infused with intrinsic worth. To bear God’s image means our lives reflect His creativity, character, and relational nature. Every human being, regardless of age, ability, background, or accomplishment, carries this sacred imprint. Your value is not earned; it is given by the Creator.

Being made in God’s image also carries a call. It is not only a status but a vocation. We are invited to reflect God’s character in the world through love, justice, creativity, and stewardship. Humanity is designed to join in God’s work of caring for creation, nurturing relationships, and serving others.

But life is complicated. We fail and wonder whether we matter. However, God’s grace is as essential to our humanity as His design. Through Christ, broken lives are restored. Significance rests not on what we achieve but on who made and redeems us.

As you walk through this devotional series, notice both the wonder of being human and the responsibility it carries. See God’s image in people, in creation, and in yourself. Remember: your dignity, worth, and purpose are anchored not in fleeting standards but in the God who created and redeems you.

Reflection:
How would your life change if you truly believed that your worth comes from being God’s image bearer? In what ways can you reflect His character and love this week?

Prayer:
Creator God, thank you for making me in your image. Help me to live fully human, reflecting your character, embracing my worth, and walking in the purpose you have designed for me.
