What Does It Mean to Be Human?

DAY 5 OF 21

Created with significance

Having thought about what it means to be made in God’s image, we are going to look at what that means for our sense of significance.

From the very beginning, God declared that humanity is not an accident. We are not random products of chance or the sum of our achievements. We are made intentionally in the image of God. This is the foundation of true significance.

To bear God’s image means we reflect His character, creativity, and relational nature. Just as a mirror reflects light, our lives are meant to reflect His glory into the world. Every human being carries this divine imprint, whether or not it is recognised by the world. That means your worth isn’t something to strive for; it is already given.

But significance is not only about identity; it is also about purpose. In Genesis 1:28, God commissions humanity to steward His creation: to cultivate, nurture, and care for the earth. We were created with the responsibility to join God in His ongoing work. From gardening to governing, from painting to parenting, all our work can reflect God’s creativity and care.

This means your significance is not dependent on career success, financial stability, or recognition. It is rooted in God’s design. You matter because God made you, and He delights in you.

Reflection:
Where do I find my worth – in what I achieve, in what others think of me, or in God’s design?

Prayer:
Creator God, thank you that I am made in your image. Help me to live from this truth, not striving for worth but resting in the dignity you have already given me. Amen.
