What Does It Mean to Be Human?Sample

Worth: The dignity of humanity
In light of God’s grandeur, the psalmist asks a profound question: What are human beings? Compared to the vast universe, we seem so small. And yet, God pays attention to us. He cares.
Psalm 8 declares that we are crowned with glory and honour. Genesis 1 echoes this truth; we are made in the image of God, designed to reflect His character in the world. Our worth is not earned by success, wealth, or recognition. It is a gift of God, inherent in every person.
This truth changes everything. It means that the disabled child, the elderly neighbour, the refugee, and even our worst enemy all bear God’s image. It means our own lives are not defined by productivity or performance but by the Creator who formed us. It also means we have responsibility. Verse 6 reminds us: God entrusted creation into human hands. We are workers, stewards, and caretakers. Every task, from tending a garden to leading a business, can become an act of worship when offered to God.
When culture reduces humanity to consumers or producers, Psalm 8 lifts our eyes. We are image bearers. To be human is to be loved, dignified, and entrusted with purpose.
Reflection:
Do I see myself as an image bearer of God? Do I see others as made in the image of God? How does that change how I view my work, relationships, and responsibilities?
Prayer:
Creator God, thank you for giving me worth and dignity as your image bearer. Help me to honour that dignity in myself and others, and to live responsibly as a steward of your creation. Amen.
