DAY 1 OF 4

We Are the Church

The Church is a People, Not a Place

The church is not merely a building or a weekly event; it is a community of believers united in Christ. As 1 Peter 2:10 reminds us, "Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people." We are called to be a family, doing life together, growing in faith, and supporting one another. The church is a living body, not confined to walls but expressed through the lives of its members.

The Church is Not Perfect, But It’s God’s Plan

The church is made up of imperfect people, yet it remains God’s chosen instrument to fulfill His purposes on earth. Ephesians 5:25 tells us that Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. Despite our flaws, we are part of God’s divine plan. We must remember that while people may hurt us, the church as the body of Christ is still His beloved bride.

God Cares Deeply About His Church

God’s love for the church is profound. Ephesians 5:25 illustrates this by comparing Christ’s love for the church to a husband’s love for his wife. This deep affection calls us to cherish and protect the church, honoring what Jesus loves. We are to treasure the church, not abandon it, and work towards its unity and integrity.

The Church is Global, Growing, and Glorious

The church is a global movement, continually expanding and reflecting God’s glory. With over 3 million churches worldwide, the body of Christ is alive and active. Matthew 16:18 assures us that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. We are part of something much larger than ourselves, a mission to proclaim the gospel and bring hope to the world.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How do you view the church in your daily life? Is it merely a place you attend, or do you see it as a community you belong to?
  2. In what ways can you contribute to the unity and growth of the church, despite its imperfections?

Applications:

  1. Engage in Community: Make a conscious effort to connect with others in your church community. Join a small group or sign up to join a volunteer team to build relationships and grow together in faith.
  2. Protect and Honor the Church: Commit to speaking positively about the church and its members. Pray for your church leaders and seek ways to support the church’s mission and vision.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the church, a community of believers united in Christ. Help us to see the church as You see it, not through our preferences or past hurts, but through Your purpose and love. Teach us to cherish and protect the church, contributing to its unity and growth. May we be active participants in Your mission, proclaiming the gospel and bringing hope to the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

About this Plan

Upon This Rock

Upon This Rock is a devotional series anchored in Jesus’s declaration in Matthew 16 that He will build His church on the unshakeable truth of who He is. These devotionals reveal the church as a people—not a place—imperfect yet God-designed, deeply loved, and unstoppable. Readers are challenged to move from spectators to active participants through unity, discipleship, and service. With a clear call to spiritual awareness and authority, this series invites believers to stand firm in Christ, close doors to darkness, and live boldly as part of God’s victorious and growing church.
