DAY 2 OF 4

We Are This, Not That

The Church Has a Clear Identity

As believers, we are called to know who we are in Christ and to live out that identity. Proverbs 29:18 reminds us that without vision, people perish. Our vision as the church is not just to attend services but to be the church in the world. Ephesians 1:23 tells us that the church is Christ's body, through which He speaks and acts. We are set apart for His glory, called to be a light in the darkness. When we understand our identity, we can confidently say, "We are this, not that."

The Church Confronts the Idols of Culture

In Acts 19:23-29, we see Paul confronting the idols of Ephesus, a city steeped in idol worship. Similarly, we are called to confront the idols in our culture and in our own lives. These idols may be money, power, or self-image. The gospel challenges us to tear down these idols and to worship God alone. We must not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).

The Church Lives by Truth, Not Trends

In a world where truth is often seen as relative, John 14:6 reminds us that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. As the church, we are called to live by the truth of God's Word, not the ever-changing trends of the world. We must stand firm in our faith, knowing that biblical Christianity and cultural convenience do not mix. Our identity as Christians means following Christ, not the culture.

The Church Stands Together with Strength

Galatians 3:28 emphasizes that in Christ, we are all one. The church is a diverse body, united in purpose and mission. Together, we stand strong against the pressures of the world. Psalm 92:13 promises that those who are planted in the house of the Lord will flourish. As we stand together, we grow stronger and more resilient, ready to face whatever challenges come our way.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what ways have you struggled with your identity in Christ, and how can you reaffirm who you are in Him today?
  2. What idols in your life need to be confronted and torn down to make room for a deeper relationship with God?

Applications:

  1. Spend time in prayer and reflection, asking God to reveal any idols in your life that need to be addressed. Commit to taking steps to remove these idols and refocus your worship on God alone.
  2. Get involved in your local church community. Whether it's joining a small group, serving on a team, or attending regularly, make a commitment to be planted in the house of the Lord and experience the flourishing that comes from being part of His family.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be Your church, set apart for Your glory. Help us to live out our identity in Christ with confidence and purpose. Reveal to us any idols that have taken Your place in our hearts, and give us the strength to tear them down. May we stand firm in Your truth, not swayed by the trends of this world. Unite us as Your body, that we may stand strong together and bring glory to Your name. Plant us in Your house, Lord, that we may flourish and grow in our faith. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

Upon This Rock

Upon This Rock is a devotional series anchored in Jesus’s declaration in Matthew 16 that He will build His church on the unshakeable truth of who He is. These devotionals reveal the church as a people—not a place—imperfect yet God-designed, deeply loved, and unstoppable. Readers are challenged to move from spectators to active participants through unity, discipleship, and service. With a clear call to spiritual awareness and authority, this series invites believers to stand firm in Christ, close doors to darkness, and live boldly as part of God’s victorious and growing church.
