DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1 – Presence Over Performance

What if the first thing God wants from you isn’t your best performance, but your quiet presence? In a world that rewards speed and productivity, it’s easy to bring that same pressure into our walk with God — measuring our worth by what we do, even in faith. But Jesus’ invitation is not “Work harder,” it’s “Come to Me.”

The P.R.A.Y.E.R. Rhythm
In the week ahead, we’ll follow the same, simple rhythm. Think of this as a guide into God’s presence — one step at a time.

P| PAUSING to be still.

R| REFLECTING on Scripture and learnings.

A| ASKING God to help us through prayer and self-reflection.

Y| YIELDING to God’s invitation.

E| EXERCISING for transformation.

R| RESTING in God’s faithful love.

P| Pause

As I begin, I pause to be still. I choose to breathe deeply and turn my whole attention toward the love and presence of God, praying, “Jesus, my Savior and Teacher, soften my heart to receive Your love, steady my mind in Your truth, and draw me into an awareness of Your presence today.” Amen.

R| Reflect

We live in a culture that constantly measures us by what we achieve, how much we produce, and how well we perform. But God’s first calling is not about DO-ing. It is about BE-ing. Before we can join God’s work in the world, we must first learn to rest in His love.

Discipleship is not a test to pass but a life to share. In the ancient world, apprentices learned from their teachers by staying close: watching, listening, and imitating. This is the picture Jesus gives us. Following Him is about companionship, not competition.

Henri Nouwen once wrote,“The question is not ‘How am I to find God?’ but ‘How am I to let myself be found by God?’”That shift changes everything. The life of faith begins not with striving but withsurrender. God isn’t asking us to prove ourselves, but inviting us to be still enough to receive His love and walk in step with it.

Think of Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet while Martha hurried around the house (Luke 10:38–42). Jesus reminded Martha that Mary had chosen the better part — the gift of simply being with Him. Presence, not performance.

Many people think discipleship is a spiritual checklist: pray more, read more, serve more, sin less. Those practices matter, but they are not the heart of discipleship. Two people can read Scripture, side by side — one driven by proving their love for God, the other drawn by God’s love forthem. Outwardly the same act but inwardly having very different motives.

A relationship shaped by performance exhausts us.A relationship motivated by love restores us.

Jesus desires your presence more than your performance. Why? Because His love is the starting place, not the reward at the end (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). What He offers is a relationship where your value is secure before you ever do a thing. And how do you step into that? By simply being with Him — resting in His love, listening for His voice, and walking at His pace.

This is the invitation Jesus offers: not exhaustion but rest, not striving but abiding. Presence over performance.

A| Ask

· In what ways do I try to measure my worth through what I do?

· If I began to live more from a place of presence instead of performance, how might my daily life look different a month from now?

Y| Yield

Yield means to surrender. It is something we practice daily, not all at once, but moment by moment. Let this prayer be one step of surrender today.

“Jesus, I release my need to perform for You.
Slow me down to walk at the pace of Your love.
Teach me to keep company with You today.
Let my life flow from Your presence, not my effort.
Amen.”

E| Exercise

Take a few minutes to notice what helps you remember God’s presence, such as music, nature, prayer, or journaling. Write it down (as the first entry in your list).

By the end of the week, these exercises will become your personal Sabbath guide to help you rest and enjoy God’s presence.

R| Rest

Release the urge to prove yourself. Trust that God’s presence is enough for you today.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28–30, MSG)

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 NIV)

Deeper Reflection

Questions for You or Your Group

  1. What part of Matthew 11:28–30 spoke to you most today?
  2. How does Jesus’ invitation to rest challenge the way you normally live?
  3. What makes it hardest for you to slow down and simply be with God?
  4. How might walking with Jesus as a companion change the way you see your daily life?
  5. What is one way we could remind each other that presence with God matters more than performance

Talk It Over

About this Plan

Compelled by Love

Performance exhausts, but presence restores. God created us to be human BE-ings before human DO-ings. Compelled by Love is a 7-day journey to rest in God’s love, feel the deep connection you were created for, and to live each day shaped by His love. Through the P.R.A.Y.E.R. rhythm (Pause, Reflect, Ask, Yield, Exercise, Rest), you’ll embrace a life-changing invitation: to live as one deeply loved by God.
