Day 4 – The Cost of Not Following
What if the risk of not following Jesus is actually greater than the cost of following him?
As we walk through our PRAYER rhythm today, let each step be a way of drawing you toward peace, love, and purpose.
P | Pause
As I begin, I pause to be still. I choose to breathe deeply. I turn my whole attention toward the love and presence of God, praying,
“Jesus, give me wisdom to recognize the path that leads to life with You.
Help me turn from the roads of false promises and guide my steps in Your way today.”
R | Reflect
We often focus on the cost of discipleship—what we give up to follow Jesus. But Dallas Willard, inThe Spirit of the Disciplines, reminds us that non-discipleship carries its own heavy price. He writes:
“Non-discipleship costs abiding peace, a life penetrated throughout by love, faith that sees everything in the light of God’s overriding governance for good, hopefulness that stands firm in the most discouraging of circumstances, power to do what is right and withstand the forces of evil. In short, it costs exactly that abundance of life Jesus said he came to bring.”
The tragedy is that the cost of non-discipleship rarely hits all at once. It sneaks in quietly—through small compromises and subtle shifts of the heart. We start to chase lesser loves, convinced they will satisfy, but they leave us restless. We may gain the whole world while slowly losing our sense of purpose and peace.
Jesus never used “bait and switch” tactics or promised a comfortable life in exchange for loyalty. He was clear and honest about both the cost and the reward of following Him. When He said,“If any want to be my followers, they must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow me”(Luke 9:23), it wasn’t to rob us of joy, but to lead us into freedom.
Discipleship is drastic, but so is non-discipleship. Jesus never pretended there was a neutral middle ground. “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy,” He said, “but I came that they may have life” (John 10:10). The rich young ruler learned this truth in real time (Mark 10:17–22). He ran to Jesus with sincerity. He asked the right questions. He stood on the edge of the life he longed for. And then Jesus touched the one place fear still ruled his heart. In that moment, he chose his wealth, believing it would secure his future. Instead, it sent him away grieving. His story reminds us that the cost of not following Jesus is not merely missing out — it is forfeiting the very life our souls hunger for.
To say “no” to Jesus is not to stay neutral—it’s to settle for less than the life you were made for. Jesus doesn’t call us to mere survival but to fullness: peace that endures, love that transforms, and purpose that satisfies. Following Him may cost you, but it will give you a life of peace, love, and purpose.
A | Ask
· Jesus, where am I holding back from following You fully?
· Am I choosing comfort now but missing the abundant life You promise?
Y | Yield
I choose to yield and entrust my life to God’s care by praying,
Lord, I don’t want to miss the life You came to give.
Protect me from the thief who would steal my joy.
Give me courage to let go of anything that keeps me from You.
Lead me into the richness of life with You.
Amen.
E | Exercise
Think about something that brings you joy and helps you feel close to God. It might be worship, sharing a meal, or a hobby you love. Write it down and consider how choosing joy can be one way of saying “yes” to the life Jesus offers.
Add it to your list as another part of your Sabbath guide.
R | Rest
Rest in the truth that Jesus offers life to the fullest, and no other way can compare.
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10, NLT)
“Then he said to the crowd, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?’” (Luke 9:23–25, NLT)
Deeper Reflection
Questions for You or Your Group
- What part of John 10:10 speaks to you most today?
- Dallas Willard wrote that non-discipleship costs us peace, love, faith, hope, and strength. Which of these feels most real to you?
- Where are you tempted to hold back from Jesus, and what do you fear losing if you let go?
- How have you seen the “thief” steal joy or peace in your life or in the lives of others?
- How can our group support one another in choosing life with Jesus over lesser paths?

About this Plan

Performance exhausts, but presence restores. God created us to be human BE-ings before human DO-ings. Compelled by Love is a 7-day journey to rest in God’s love, feel the deep connection you were created for, and to live each day shaped by His love. Through the P.R.A.Y.E.R. rhythm (Pause, Reflect, Ask, Yield, Exercise, Rest), you’ll embrace a life-changing invitation: to live as one deeply loved by God.
