Day 1: Eternity Feels Close
You do not have to be dramatic to feel it, but sometimes something cracks the surface of everyday life, and eternity suddenly feels close. A hospital room. A phone call. A near miss on the road. Or a story of someone who crossed the threshold of death and came back. In that moment, the noise of normal priorities gets quieter, and a deeper question rises: What am I doing with the life I’ve been given?
Near-death experiences often carry this strange clarity. People describe leaving the body behind while awareness remains, as if you are more awake than ever. The details vary, but the effect is consistent. It shakes the illusion that you are only a body, only a schedule, only a set of circumstances. It confronts you with the reality that life here is a doorway, not the whole house.
If you’re honest, you might feel both curiosity and discomfort when you think about that. That’s understandable. That truth can either harden you or humble you. Humility is where hope begins. When you remember your days are numbered, you stop postponing what matters most. You stop bargaining with God as if you control the timeline. You stop treating repentance like an emergency option and start seeing it as a gift.
The thief beside Jesus did not have time to fix his past. He had time to turn. With a few honest words, he placed himself in mercy, and Jesus answered with assurance. If you are still breathing, you have time to turn too. Not later, not when you feel less messy, not when you can explain everything. Today. The nearness of eternity is not meant to terrify you. It is meant to wake you up to the kindness of God, who offers salvation now, while your heart can still respond.
Reflection Questions:
- What moments have made eternity feel real to you lately?
- Where have you been delaying surrender because you assume you have plenty of time?
- What would it look like to turn toward Jesus with simple honesty today?
- How would your priorities shift if you lived as if today mattered forever?
Prayer:
Jesus, keep my heart awake. I don’t want to drift through life distracted. Help me turn to You today, receive Your mercy, and live like what matters most truly matters. Amen.
