Day Three // Reading: Psalm 139:13-14
Devotional
“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”
— PSALM 139:13-14, NKJV
Psalm 139 is one of those chapters that you want to print out, hang on your mirror, and read frequently throughout your day. It oozes with God’s love and care for His children. Many times, we talk about the love that our mother had for us, carrying us inside her belly for nine months, but God’s love surpasses that. He took the time to form us in our mother’s womb.
When the Bible uses the word “womb,” it implies God’s sovereign care, comfort, and calling on your life even before you were born. God was thinking about you even before you were born! So if you are ever tempted to think that God doesn’t love you, reading about the intricate way He formed you before you were born should silence that lie.
Let’s talk about these words: care, comfort, and calling.
Care
God cared for you then, and He cares for you now. He cares about your hopes, your dreams, and your disappointments. He cares about that thing at school that is frustrating you and that friend who’s left you unopened on Snap. He cares about every detail of your life, so bring it all to Him in prayer. Talk out loud to Him when no one is around. Let His care lead you to open, honest conversations with Him.
Comfort
God comforted you before you were born, and He is comforting you now. Do you ever just need a shoulder to cry on? Someone to hug you tight and take away some of the things you are carrying? Well, God is there for that, too! The word “comfort” means to reassure and to bring cheer to someone. God wants to be your comfort throughout life, so let Him. He loves you enough to help carry your disappointments and setbacks.
Calling
God called you before you were born, and you are still called. No matter what the world tells you, no matter what lies scream at you—you are called by God to love Him and share Him with the world around you. With Him, He calls you: strong (2 Corinthians 12:10), victorious (1 John 5:4), courageous (Joshua 1:9) and never alone (Isaiah 41:10).
Remember these promises on the road ahead, and above all else, remember how deeply loved you are.
Prayer: God, I thank You for teaching me about Your love for me and who I am in You. I thank You today for Your care, Your comfort, and Your calling that has rested on my life even before I was born. I choose to embrace your love. Help me to love You too.
Question: Talk through being cared for, comforted by and called by God. What do those words mean to you?
