Who Am I?Sample

Identity Crisis
The devil is not mighty, but he’s very crafty. And he understands the power and excellence of the identity God has given us—way better than we do. Like him, if we grasped the significance of that identity, our lives would flourish and overflow with fruitfulness. And the devil knows this all too well. So his greatest weapon against God’s people is their ignorance.
Those who lack knowledge of their identity become easy prey for the devil, and Eve is a prime example.
What did the devil, disguised as a snake, say to Eve? To the woman created in the image of God, he spoke about her very identity. He craftily steered the conversation, seeking to undermine her understanding of who she really was.
You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. (Genesis 3:4-5)
The Bible states that Eve was created in the image of God from the very moment of her creation (Gen 1:27). But she had no knowledge or awareness of it. Exploiting her ignorance, the devil tempted her with the notion that she could become like God if she ate the fruit. She fell into his trap, believing she was going to attain an identity for the very first time.
If only she had fully understood her identity, her response to the devil would have been very different. “It is written that Adam and I are already made in the image of God,” she would have declared boldly, citing Genesis 1:27. And the devil would have fled in shame. And we, as her descendants, would now be enjoying the bounty of Eden, communing closely with God every day. Instead, her ignorance turned the script upside down.
We may pity Eve, but many of us are just as ignorant today, and the devil continues to exploit that ignorance. He uses the same tricks he used on her—concealing who we are while offering false counsel on how to attain a new identity. The devil encourages people to embark on an endless quest for identity through their jobs, appearance, relationships, wealth, fame, and more. The list goes on, and like a dog chasing its tail, they never come to the end of their search.
We must not be like Eve, who, in her ignorance, ate the forbidden fruit in a misguided attempt to become like God. She ultimately lost the identity she already possessed. Her ignorance led to the fall of all humanity. It is also the root cause of terrible deaths, poverty, natural disasters, and the principalities that govern mankind today.
May the darkness of ignorance be lifted from our lives. May we receive the revelation in our hearts that we are already the beloved children of God. Let us never forget, in any situation, that He genuinely loves us.
Challenge Question:
What makes it hard for you to believe you are a child of God? Were you simply unaware of this concept of identity, or have life’s circumstances caused you to doubt your identity as God’s child?

About this Plan

Countless churchgoers are trapped in a cycle of spiritual failure because they lack understanding of who they truly are. We think we know who we are, yet our identity is more misplaced than we realize. More disheartening is that we are unaware of our own ignorance. And this ignorance is the devil’s greatest weapon. Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32). The moment we know the truth about who we really are, our life will have a radical shift. This devotional aims to help you identify who you are.
