Righteousness in Progress

DAY 5 OF 7

RIGHTEOUS HUMILITY

How are you doing so far? Have your new efforts towards righteousness started to pay off yet? If the answer is yes, pay careful attention to today’s devotion.

In Luke 5, Jesus brings a serious plot twist to centuries of scriptural teachings on righteousness. The Old Testament provides many guidelines on how to live righteously and gain favor with God. But then Jesus turns it all upside down. Instead of reinforcing the boundaries between the wicked and the righteous, Jesus opens the playing field. “‘I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent’” (Luke 5:32, NLT).

Wow. That changes everything. All the promises that I feel entitled to become unfathomable gifts of grace. All the vengeance promised against the wicked reminds me of undeserved mercy. And every beautiful picture of Jesus’ righteousness makes me want Him more.

Our walk towards righteousness is suddenly removed from our shoulders. “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty of sins… God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus” (Romans 3:23-26, NLT).

We don’t DO righteousness, we WEAR it. Whenever a speck of righteousness becomes visible in us, it is just Jesus on display. It should surprise us every time He brings out a little bit of beauty through us.

Do you feel discouraged when you fail to live righteously? Or do you think it may relieve you of an impossibly heavy burden to please God?

Let us recognize the One who gives us the opportunity to display His beautiful righteousness. And let us allow the Holy Spirit to override our flimsy efforts to do it on our own. “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy (Ephesians 4:23-24, NLT).

About this Plan

Righteousness in Progress

What is your understanding of righteousness? In the Bible, many of God’s promises to us are based on His and our righteousness. But what does it look like in practical terms? In this Plan, we will equip ourselves with knowledge and tools for righteous living. I hope that we will grow in holiness as we get to know our righteous God a little better.
