The hour has come (1)
“The hour has come,” and “My time has not yet come.”
Jesus is recorded saying both of these phrases several times throughout the Gospels. Together, they revealed something important about how Jesus lived: He had a clear sense of timing. He lived each moment with intentionality.
There were moments when good things could have been done, but Jesus waited. In other moments, He saw a need, and He addressed it immediately. Then there were moments when the cost was high, the task was heavy, and Jesus knew: this is the hour.
That kind of discernment requires deep alignment with the Father’s will. It requires attentiveness, obedience, and trust. And it always comes at a cost.
In John 12, Jesus explains that a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die. If it does not, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. Jesus is speaking about His own death. “The hour has come.” The grain will fall. And He moves forward without hesitation.
As Jesus speaks these words in John’s Gospel, He knows exactly what is coming. He faces death. He does not avoid it. He completes the work entrusted to Him.
Don’t miss His example. “The hour has come." What hour are you living in now? This day, this hour, what does the Father have for you to do?
Not every need requires your response. Not every task is yours to take on. But there may be that one person or one situation, where obedience is required right now.
The person next to you.
The situation placed before you.
If you sense the Lord’s prompting, step in with courage.
Reflection Questions
- How can you become attentive to the time and task God has given you?
- How do you discern when “the hour has come”?
- Is there something the Lord is asking you to do right now?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your example. Thank You for going forward even when the cost was great. Today, I make myself available to You. Help me discern Your timing and Your direction. I want to serve You faithfully in the time You have given me. Amen.
