The hour has come (2)
“The hour of truth.”
“This is the moment.”
These phrases carry weight. They signal something decisive is happening. If the moment is missed, everything changes.
John 13 describes such a moment. Jesus knows His hour has come. He is about to return to the Father, and the work He came to do is nearing completion. In The Chosen, Jesus says, “We’re running out of time.” The turning point in world history is drawing near. This is exactly why Jesus came.
Knowing that a moment is significant is one thing. Knowing what you are meant to do in that moment is another.
Jesus knew what His task was. He came to do the will of the Father, to redeem the world, to open the way back to God. Jesus knew what He had to do.
Scripture gives other examples of people who knew what they had to do when the hour came.
Esther was told she may have come into her royal position “for such a time as this.” She recognized her responsibility and sought the Lord’s will through prayer and fasting. Because of her courage, an entire people is saved.
Ruth makes a quieter but equally decisive choice. She commits herself to Naomi and to the God of Israel. She chooses faithfulness and obedience, not knowing where the path will lead. Her story becomes part of the lineage of Jesus Himself.
Both women acted without full clarity. Both, took courageous steps rooted in trust.
Do you have a sense of what God is asking of you right now? Do you know what step you need to take?
Discerning calling often begins simply. Esther began with fasting and prayer. Ruth began with the single choice to go along with her mother-in-law. Scripture describes God’s word as a lamp for your feet, not a floodlight for the entire road. Guidance usually comes one step at a time.
Get moving. Pray. Read the Bible. Discover, trust, and talk it through with others. God wants to take your hand and show you the way.
Reflection Questions
- What do you learn from Jesus’ clarity and focus on His task?
- What do you learn from the lives of Esther and Ruth?
- Where might God be saying, “for such a time as this” in your life or in someone else’s?
- What step could help bring greater clarity right now?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your faithfulness and Your purpose. I trust that You are at work in my life, even when the way forward is not fully clear. My trust is in You. You are good, and I want to walk in Your plans. Lord, teach me Your ways. Amen.
