Easter Reflections

DAY 22 OF 28

In Matthew 27:57-61, we meet Joseph of Arimathea. Matthew describes him as a rich man. In Mark 13, he is described as an honourable counsellor who waited for the Kingdom of God that is given to us. Luke describes him as a good and righteous man who never consented with the Council. John says he was a secret disciple of Christ because he feared the Jews. In John 19:38, we also see Nicodemus getting involved in preparing Jesus for his burial. Who would have ever thought that two men from the Council would meet and grant the Lord Jesus a burial befitting a king? We might have expected the disciples to ask for his body, but God had other plans. That others who were not numbered among his disciples oversaw his burial proves the authenticity of his death and burial.

The burial account of Jesus speaks to his authenticity, validates everything he taught, and fulfils the prophecies concerning him. It was common practice that a blasphemer who was stoned or crucified would strictly be buried in a potter's land. God overthrew the Jewish way of doing things with his mighty hand. While his enemies were still gloating over the death of Christ, God was, on the other hand, laying the groundwork for his Son's vindication. God set up a scenario in which there would be numerous witnesses to his death and burial, so that his resurrection would also have as many witnesses.

The despair the disciples must have experienced while Jesus lay dead in the tomb during that first Easter season must have been unimaginable; they knew not of the victory just around the bend. Too often, we find ourselves in similar desperate circumstances. May we be encouraged this season. The night might seem dark, but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I thank you for the encouragement you give through your Word. Thank you for the death, burial, and resurrection of your Son. You made it all work out for the good of those you love. Be glorified in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
