Titus: Belief + Behavior

DAY 1 OF 14

A Faith That Works

Titus 1:1–4

Paul opens his letter to Titus with a packed sentence that sets up everything to follow. He doesn't just say hello. He anchors his entire identity and mission in three things: who God is, what God has promised, and what God has done. He is "a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ," writing for "the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness." That last phrase is the theme of the whole letter: truth and godliness belong together. What we believe shapes how we live.

This was critically important on Crete, the island where Titus was pastoring. The culture was morally chaotic, and false teachers were mixing pagan ideas with Christian ones. Paul's answer wasn't just to teach better doctrine. It was to show that right doctrine produces right living. Belief and behavior are inseparable.

Paul also points Titus and us toward the horizon: "the hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began." When life is hard and the work is discouraging, Paul grounds everything in the character of a God who cannot lie and a promise that stretches from before creation into eternity. The Gospel isn't just good advice. It's the announcement of something God set in motion long before any of us arrived.

Reflection:
Where in your own life do you sense a gap between what you say you believe and how you actually live? What would it look like to close that gap this week?
