Titus: Belief + Behavior

DAY 5 OF 14

Living as God's People in a Watching World

Titus 2:9–10

These two verses are easy to skip past, but they contain a remarkable phrase. Paul is addressing servants, a large portion of the early church, and he tells them to live in a way that "in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior." The word "adorn" is a jewelry word, the same word used to describe decorating or beautifying something. Paul says faithful, honest, respectful living beautifies the Gospel.

The first-century world was watching early Christians closely. They were a strange new community that cut across social lines, accepted people of every background, and made audacious claims about a crucified man being the Lord of the universe. Their everyday conduct was a constant test of whether those claims held up.

Nothing much has changed. People are still watching. A coworker who sees you respond to a difficult situation with patience, a neighbor who notices your generosity, a family member who watches how you treat others under pressure — they are forming opinions about Christianity based on what they observe in you. Your daily life is either adorning the Gospel or obscuring it. That's not a burden meant to crush you. It's an invitation to let what you believe actually show in how you live.

Reflection:
Think about the people in your life who don't know Jesus. How might your conduct this week either adorn or undermine the Gospel in their eyes?
