Fearless

DAY 7 OF 8

Day 7 – Fear God, Not People

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

– Matthew 10:28

The fear of people and social anxiety are common struggles among many women today. This fear often stems from past trauma, rejection, or negative opinions from others. While these experiences are real and valid, we must be careful not to let the fear of people overshadow our reverence for God. When we prioritise pleasing others over honouring Him, we risk turning people into idols.

Living for God, Not for People

Everything we do should ultimately glorify God, not seek human approval. Paul makes this clear in Galatians 1:10: if he were still trying to please people, he would not be a servant of Christ. Jesus also teaches in Matthew 10:28 that we should fear God rather than people, because only God holds authority over both life and eternity.

To fear God means to honour Him, revere Him, and acknowledge His supreme authority. The Old Testament reminds us:

  • “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).
  • “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Psalm 111:10).

When we fear God, we are compelled to live righteously and reject sin.

The Dangers of Fearing People

Fearing people leads to anxiety, insecurity, and a constant need for validation. Past rejection or opposition can shape our actions if we let fear dominate. But remember this truth: when God is for you, no one can stand against you. His presence, protection, and purpose are far greater than any human fear.

Root Your Confidence in God

Anchor your confidence in God, not in people’s approval.

Take a moment to reflect: Do you fear people more than God? Do you seek to please others over honouring Him? Write down your fears and find Scriptures to counteract them.

God’s Promises to Overcome Fear

  • The Lord is on your side: Fear loses its authority when God stands with you.
  • The Lord is your light and strength: He illuminates your path and strengthens you when fear rises.
  • The Lord is your helper: You can live confidently knowing God actively supports and strengthens you.
  • The Lord will never leave you: His presence urges you to be strong and courageous, no matter how intimidating the road ahead is.

Have you ever found yourself fearing people more than God? How did you overcome it?

In tomorrow’s reading, we’ll explore living courageously, trusting God fully, and stepping boldly into His plans.
