Communication Tips From the WiseSample

“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offence” (Prov. 19:11 NIV)
Love is patient for a reason. Your spouse is a unique individual, so they will do things differently from you and may have habits you find annoying. It’s important to remember that not every annoyance warrants a response. This is especially true when tensions are running high - minor inconveniences are easily blown out of proportion. So, it becomes important not to allow emotions to control you, to exercise patience, and let go of trivial things.
So how do you not sweat the small stuff? Here are a few things you can do:
- Make it a habit to pause, take a deep breath, and count to ten before reacting.
- Ask yourself, ‘will this matter in a year’s time’?
- Remember that you can’t control everything.
- Give your spouse the benefit of a doubt – they probably aren’t intentionally trying to annoy you.
