Communication Tips From the Wise

DAY 4 OF 4

“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Prov. 12:18)

Speaking mindlessly always leads to harm. It’s therefore important to think before we speak because our words have the power to either nurture or weaken our relationship. Paul challenges us to "not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Eph. 4:29). So, be sure to taste your words before you spit them out because they can only be forgiven, not forgotten, once spoken. It is better to bite your tongue than to say something you will later regret.

Here are a few things to do to access your words before you speak them:

  • Are my words helpful or harmful?
  • Are my words necessary or are they propelled by how I’m feeling?
  • How would I feel if the same words were said to me?

Other proverbs to reflect on: Proverbs 15:1, Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs 13:3, Proverbs 17:27
