Free, But Still Living Like a Captive
DEVOTIONAL
If we have really been set free, why do so many of us still live like prisoners?
It is one of the most tender realities in the Christian life. People who have genuinely been rescued can still think, feel, and behave as though they never were. The door is open, the chains are off, and yet they stay in the cell because the cell is all they have ever known.
There is a name for something like this. When people are held captive long enough, they can form a bond with the very thing that held them. Freedom comes, but it feels foreign and even frightening, so they drift back towards the familiar. Some who are rescued out of terrible situations struggle to trust the safety they are offered, because their whole idea of normal was shaped inside the captivity.
Many of God's children carry a spiritual version of this. We have been freed, but we still identify more with the old master than with the new life. We hear "you are righteous" and flinch, because "I am just a struggling sinner" feels truer. We were brought to a table and still behave like staff. None of this means the freedom is not real. It means freedom has to be learned, and a heart shaped by slavery takes time to trust safety.
So if you feel free in theory but bound in practice, do not despair, and please do not pile shame on top of it. You are not a fraud. You are a freed captive who is still learning the feel of an open door.
And the way forward is not to try harder to feel free. It is something quieter and far more restful. Tomorrow, before we renew anything, we stop.
REFLECTION
Where do you still identify more with your old life than with who Christ says you now are?
FREEDOM STEP
Notice one moment today when you instinctively call yourself by an old name (failure, addict, fraud), and gently replace it with what is now true: free, forgiven, His.
PRAYER
Father, I have been free for longer than I have lived free. Thank You that You are patient with me. Heal the part of me that still trusts the old master more than it trusts You, and teach me the feel of an open door. Amen.
