Grace Is Not a Painkiller. It's the Cure.
DEVOTIONAL
Could it be that the grace you have been taught is too small to actually heal you?
Think about the difference between a painkiller and a cure. A painkiller numbs the symptom for a while. It feels like relief, but the problem underneath is untouched, and before long, you need another dose, and a stronger one. A cure is different. A cure goes to the source and deals with the actual sickness.
Many of us have been handed grace as if it were a painkiller. Grace as permission. A spiritual coping mechanism that helps us feel better about staying exactly the same. And so people limp along for years, comforted but not changed, taking the edge off the ache without ever being made well.
But that is not the grace of the New Testament. Grace is not God lowering His standard and looking the other way. Grace is the empowering, healing presence of God Himself coming to live on the inside of you. Paul says grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and yes to the life we were made for. It does not merely cover you. It changes you, from within.
This is the difference that sets people free. Grace is not a crutch the broken lean on forever. It is a healing the whole begin to walk in. It is not God's opinion of you slowly improving from a distance. It is God taking up residence in you and going to work at the root.
So if the grace you have known has only ever numbed you, you have not been given too much grace. You have been given too little of what grace really is. There is a deeper healing on offer. Tomorrow, we deal with the trap that keeps even sincere believers stuck: trying to manage sin instead of being healed of it.
REFLECTION
Has grace functioned in your life more like a painkiller (helping you cope) or a cure (actually changing you)?
FREEDOM STEP
Stop managing one ache today and bring it to the source. Tell the Holy Spirit, "I do not just want relief, I want healing," and let Him into the root of it.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that Your grace is not permission to stay broken, but power to be made whole. Come to the root of what I have only ever numbed. Heal me from the inside out, by Your Spirit. Amen.
