Stop Running Someone Else's Race
DEVOTIONAL
You will never feel free while you are trying to run in someone else's lane.
Comparison is one of the quietest thieves of freedom. We look sideways at someone else's gift, someone else's calling, someone else's pace, and we either shrink in envy or strain to keep up. Either way, we stop running the race actually marked out for us, and a runner watching the next lane is a runner about to trip.
When the early church leaders met Paul, something beautiful happened. They recognised the specific grace on his life. They saw he was made for one assignment and Peter for another, and instead of competing, they blessed each other and ran their own lanes. That single decision shaped history. It came from a freedom we badly need: the freedom to be exactly who God made you, and not who He made someone else.
Hebrews tells us to throw off everything that hinders and run the race marked out for us. Marked out for us. There is a lane with your name on it. Peter says each of us has received a gift, and we are to use it to serve, as stewards of God's grace in its many forms. Your grace is not a lesser version of anyone else's. It is the very thing the body needs from you.
So part of walking free is making peace with two things: the grace you have, and the grace you do not. You are not the complete package, and you were never meant to be. The pressure to be good at everything is just another chain. Owning your lane and celebrating the runner beside you is freedom.
Once you stop comparing and start running, something even deeper opens up: the relationship that powers the whole race. Tomorrow we listen for the cry at the centre of it.
REFLECTION
Whose lane have you been trying to run in? What is the specific grace God has actually given you?
FREEDOM STEP
Name one gift God has given you and use it today, however small the act. And genuinely celebrate someone else's gift instead of comparing yourself to it.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that You made me on purpose, with a grace and a lane that are mine. Free me from comparison. Help me run my own race with joy, and cheer on the people running theirs. Amen.
