Free to Love Like Jesus
DEVOTIONAL
Freedom from something is only half the story. The better half is what you are now free for.
It is possible to be set free and waste it. Paul saw the danger and named it: you were called to freedom, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Real freedom was never just the breaking of a chain. It was the opening of a life. Free from is the door. Free for is the room you walk into.
Think about how much of your inner energy used to go into managing your brokenness. Hiding, defending, coping, performing, surviving the same old struggles. Now imagine all of that energy released and redirected. That is what freedom is for. Not so you can finally do whatever you want, but so you can finally do what you were made for: love God and love people with your whole self.
This is why a freedom that only ever turns inward starts to curdle. Peter says to live as free people, but not to use your freedom as a cover-up for evil. Live as God's servants. Freedom that only serves itself slowly becomes a new kind of cage. Freedom that turns outward in love becomes the most alive thing on earth.
So the measure of your freedom is not mainly how much you have stopped doing. It is how much love you now have to give. The chains came off so your hands would be free to serve.
You were set free to love. That is the room. But love needs a place to land, and so do you, which is why tomorrow we go to the safest place in the universe: the security that actually heals a person.
REFLECTION
Now that you are free, what is your freedom mostly being spent on? Is it turning inward, or outward in love?
FREEDOM STEP
Take the energy you would normally spend on self-protection or self-improvement today, and spend it on one concrete act of love for someone else.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that You did not just free me from something, You freed me for something. Take the energy that used to go into surviving, and turn it outward into love. Let my freedom be felt by the people around me. Amen.
