You've Been Trying So Hard to Get Free
Devotion
What if the freedom you have been straining for is something you already have?
Most of us treat freedom like a goal at the end of a long climb. If I can just break this habit, quiet this anxious thought, stop failing in the same place, then one day I will finally be free. So we strive. We white-knuckle through another week, and when we slip, we start the climb again from the bottom.
Here is the revelation the next three weeks are built on. You are not climbing towards freedom. You are already standing in it. On the cross, Jesus did not say, "It is begun." He said, "It is finished." The work was done. The debt was paid. The prison door was opened from the outside, and it has never once swung shut again.
Paul says it plainly: it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Notice the order. He set us free first. The freedom came before the striving, not as its reward. You do not behave your way into it. You wake up to it.
This matters because you cannot fight your way out of a cell that is already open. The struggle to get free just keeps you staring at the lock. The invitation this week is to stop pulling on a door Jesus already unlocked, and simply walk through.
So before we talk habits or thoughts or change, settle one thing. Freedom is not the prize at the end of these 21 days. It is the ground you are already standing on. Tomorrow, we name what actually held us.
Reflection
Where have you been treating freedom as something to earn, rather than something you have already been handed?
Freedom Step
Name one area where you have been straining to get free, and say out loud, "Jesus has already set me free here." Let the words be true before you feel them.
Prayer
Father, thank You that my freedom is not a project I have to finish. It is a gift Jesus already finished for me. Help me stop pulling on a door You have already opened, and teach me to live from what is already mine. Amen.
