DAY 2 OF 21

You Were Never as Free as You Thought

DEVOTIONAL

Before we go any further, there is an uncomfortable truth to face. The version of freedom you chased before Christ was never really freedom at all.

We tend to picture bondage as the dramatic stuff. The addiction. The destructive relationship. The thing we cannot seem to stop. And yes, those are chains. But Paul points to something deeper and far more ordinary. He says that before Christ, every one of us was a slave to sin.

Notice he does not say we simply did sinful things, as if the problem were only our behaviour. He says we were slaves. Sin was not just what we did. It was who owned us. We were not free people who occasionally made poor choices. We were captives acting out of our captivity.

This is why "just try harder" never set anyone free. A slave cannot release themselves. You can decide a thousand times to be different, but if the real issue is ownership, willpower only rattles the chain. We did not sin because we were free to choose it. We sinned because, underneath it all, we belonged to a master we did not even know we had.

That sounds bleak, but it is actually the most hopeful thing you will read this week. Because if your real problem was never your behaviour, then your real solution was never going to be better behaviour either. You did not need to be coached. You needed to be bought.

So here is the honest question this whole journey turns on. What if you have been treating a slavery problem as though it were a self-discipline problem? Tomorrow, we will see what Jesus actually did about it, and it is bigger than forgiving a list of mistakes.

REFLECTION

Where have you been fighting your behaviour, when the deeper issue was something only Jesus could change in you?

FREEDOM STEP

Write down one thing you have repeatedly tried to fix by willpower alone, and hand it to Jesus as an ownership issue, not a discipline issue.

PRAYER

Father, I admit I have tried to free myself by effort, and it has worn me out. Thank You that You saw a deeper problem than my behaviour, and You dealt with it. Open my eyes this week to the freedom You have already given. Amen.
