Fruit Grows. It Isn't Forced.

Have you ever tried to force yourself to be more patient, more loving, more at peace, and managed it for about an hour?

There is a reason striving for character never lasts. Paul calls love, joy, peace, patience and the rest the fruit of the Spirit. Not the achievements of the disciplined. Fruit. And fruit is something that grows. You have never once seen an apple tree straining, grunting, trying hard to produce apples. It simply stays connected to the life in the trunk, and in time the fruit appears.

Jesus said it plainly. Remain in me, and I in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself. It must remain in the vine. Apart from me you can do nothing. The whole secret of a changed life is hidden in one word: remain. Stay connected. Abide. The fruit is not something you squeeze out by effort. It is something the life of Christ produces through a branch that stays close to Him.

This is wonderfully freeing, because it takes the pressure off your performance and puts it onto your connection. The question is no longer "am I patient enough, loving enough, holy enough?" The question is "am I staying close to Jesus?" Get the connection right, and the fruit takes care of itself over time. It may be slower than you would like, but it is real, and it lasts, because it grew rather than being forced.

So if your character feels thin today, do not whip the branch. Tend the connection. Presence over pressure, always.

And here is where the fruit is meant to go. It was never only for you. Tomorrow we discover what your freedom is actually for.

REFLECTION

Are you trying to force fruit, or tending your connection to Jesus? Where do you most need to simply remain this week?

Build one small, unhurried moment of connection with Jesus into today (a walk, a worship song, a few honest minutes) and let it be about presence, not productivity.

PRAYER

Father, thank You that the life I long for is fruit, not pressure. Help me stay close to Jesus and trust that what grows from that connection is real. Take the strain off my performance and put it on Your presence. Amen.
