DAY 18 OF 21

Freedom Needs a Direction

DEVOTIONAL

Here is something the story of David and Bathsheba quietly teaches: freedom with no direction is dangerous.

The account opens with a telling line. It was the spring, the time when kings go off to war, but David stayed in Jerusalem. He had freedom, power, rest, every good thing, and an empty afternoon with no purpose pulling on it. And it was in that vacuum, not in the heat of battle, that he drifted into the choice that nearly cost him everything. He did not fall because he was busy with his calling. He fell because he had stepped out of it.

This is worth facing honestly. Where there is a vacuum of purpose, temptation rushes in. A free life with nowhere to go does not stay neutral for long. The same energy that was freed up for the kingdom will, if left idle, find somewhere lesser to spend itself. Freedom was never meant to be aimless.

But look at where Paul points that freedom. Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness. Freedom has a direction. It leads somewhere. Ephesians says we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that He prepared in advance for us to do. There is a purpose with your name on it, prepared before you arrived.

So if you have felt strangely vulnerable lately, restless, drifting, more tempted than usual, the answer may not be more rules. It may be more mission. An engaged heart is a protected heart. A free life pointed at God's purposes is far harder to derail than a free life sitting idle.

Freedom needs somewhere to go. Tomorrow we discover where: it was always meant to overflow.

REFLECTION

Where in your life is there a vacuum of purpose right now? What might God be inviting you to step into?

FREEDOM STEP

Identify one God-given responsibility or assignment you have been avoiding, and take one concrete step back into it today.

PRAYER

Father, thank You that my freedom has a direction. Guard me from drifting. Show me the good works You prepared for me, and help me step into my purpose, so my heart stays engaged with You. Amen.
