DAY 17 OF 21

The Table, Not the Pig Pen

DEVOTIONAL

When do you think the prodigal son actually came home? Not where you might expect.

We tend to assume his turnaround happened in the pig pen, when hunger brought him to his senses. Or on the long road back, rehearsing his apology. But watch the story closely. He came trudging home with a speech prepared, ready to offer himself as a hired servant, still thinking like a slave. The Father interrupts him before he can even finish. A robe. A ring. Sandals. A feast. And a son who had braced for a transaction is suddenly swept up in a celebration.

I think the prodigal truly came home the moment he stopped negotiating and let himself be a son. Not in the pen, and not on the road, but at the table, when he finally received what the Father was giving and believed he belonged there.

This is what repentance has been pointing to all along. It is not grovelling your way back into favour. It is the kindness of God leading you home. Paul says it is God's kindness that leads us to repentance. Not His anger. His kindness. The Father runs. The Father interrupts the apology. The Father throws the party. Your part is simply to stop offering to be staff and sit down as a child.

Many of us are still standing at the edge of the room with our hired-servant speech, when there is already a seat with our name on it. Freedom is not earning your way back to the table. It is believing you belong there, and sitting down.

So sit down. You are home. Now, with a son's heart and a seat at the table, your freedom is ready to do what it was always meant to do. Tomorrow we turn outward, and discover that freedom needs somewhere to go.

REFLECTION

Are you still standing at the edge with a servant's speech, or have you sat down as a son or daughter at the Father's table?

FREEDOM STEP

Stop rehearsing your worthiness today. Picture the seat the Father has set for you, and simply sit down in it: receive His welcome before you try to earn it.

PRAYER

Father, thank You that You run to me, interrupt my apologies, and set a place for me at Your table. I stop offering to be a servant. I sit down as Your child. Thank You that I am already home. Amen.
