Day 5

Key Passage: Matthew 26.36-38

Jesus gave glimpses of the life God intended for us. He broke through the brokenness. He brought miraculous healing to hundreds and hundreds of people during his ministry.

Yet his ultimate purpose was making a way for humans to be in relationship with God. That would require Jesus to suffer as he pays the penalty for our sin that separates us from God. It’s a burden we can’t imagine. Jesus is hours away from his death and he’s anticipating the pain and separation from the Father. Jesus is contemplating the Father turning his back and placing the sin of the world on his shoulders.

Let’s rejoin Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as he wrestles with the reality of the cross.

• How would you describe Jesus’ emotion and posture as he prays? How would you describe Jesus’ two prayers (vv. 39 & 42)? If the Father prevented Jesus’ suffering, what do you think would have happened?

I know there is no other way

• Have you experienced God’s strength in your darkest places? Are you in a dark place right now? Know that Jesus has been there and he is with you. Pour out your pain and frustration to Jesus right now. Write it out, if that helps. Thank Jesus for his example, love and power as you follow him.
