Acel Van Ommen: You are a Child of the KingHalimbawa
GRATEFUL
Have you ever come across incidents such as a customer rudely reprimanding a waiter in a restaurant or a person arguing with another over a spot in a parking lot? While all of us are guilty of losing our temper one way or another, incidents like these result from an issue of entitlement in our hearts. The idea of entitlement drives us to demand our rights even to the point of hurting others, but makes us believe that we are always the victims. We end up being rude, harsh, and insensitive towards other people to get what we think we deserve-to get what we think rightfully belongs to us.
People who act and think this way struggle more than those who don't because what they receive usually doesn't meet what they demand for. On the other hand, those who believe that everything they have is an undeserved favor respond with a grateful heart.
When something bad happens to us, we tend to blame God for it. We complain about hardships; we protest against injustice. This is because we think we don't deserve any less than what we think we do. But the sad truth is we don't deserve anything. All of us have sinned and have fallen short of God's glory thus we all rightfully deserve to die. However, God wants us back to Him so He bought us with a price. Through His grace and mercy the power of sin and death no longer has a hold of us. We have been set free not because we deserve it. God just loves us so much.
Embracing this truth will keep us humble and grateful for whatever we have right now. We start to accept things with gladness because we know they are gifts we don't deserve. We do things joyfully and excellently because we see them as a privilege more than an obligation. We carry with us grateful hearts because no matter how many problems we face, they can never measure up to the goodness of God in our lives.
A grateful heart produces humility and joy.
