Understanding God's Heart For The Poor

Concern for the Poor Is a Given

Do you think people with a pet dog ever wonder, “Should I feed the dog today?” Feeding your pet is a given! It demonstrates your care and commitment to the dog.

In the Bible, caring for the poor is not considered an option. If we know and love God, we are going to demonstrate it by caring for those he cares about. As the late Bishop David Sheppard reminded us, “God has a bias to the poor.”

Jeremiah had to deliver a harsh warning from the Lord to the royals ruling over Judah. He warned them about their corrupt ways. They were self-seeking and blind to the needs of the marginalized.

King Josiah’s response is an example to follow: “He did what was right and just… he defended the cause of the poor and needy.” And the Lord goes on to add, "Is that not what it means to know me?"

It's as if God is saying, “If you know me and love me, you are going to care for those in need—those who can't defend themselves and those who are abused and neglected by others. Caring for the poor is what we do in my family.”

Reflection

Ask the Lord to work on your heart, to soften it toward those in need. He will give you opportunities to demonstrate, in practical ways, your concern for those in need.

Prayer

Father, you are a good Father who cares for those in need. I pray that people would see in me a family likeness to you. Open my eyes to the needs of people around me and give me opportunities today to show love and care to others. Amen.
