The Plagues Continue

In this chapter, the confrontation between the LORD and the gods of Egypt continues. Frogs, gnats, flies: these all represented gods the Egyptians worshiped:

  • Frogs: Heqet, the goddess of fertility and childbirth (she was often depicted as a frog).
  • Lice: Geb, the god of the earth, father of snakes, and central to creation (Geb ruled over the dust of the earth, where the lice rose from).
  • Flies: Khepri, the god of the morning sun and creation (he had the head of a fly).

Did you notice that each of these gods was associated with creation or birth? In delivering his chosen people, God directly confronts each god of Egypt and destroys their influence. The God of Israel is the true Creator and life-giver. After having their fill of frogs, lice, and flies, the Egyptians requested to be relieved of their presence. God had shown himself superior in every way.

Every god of the world is unworthy of our loyalty. Only Jesus, the very essence of God, is worthy of our loyalty. Throughout the scriptures, this fact is demonstrated time over time.

Question: Joshua commanded Israel to "choose this day whom you will serve." You choose: whom are you going to serve? The gods of this world or Jesus? The choice is yours, so choose wisely.

Prayer: Thank God for his authority in your life and over creation, and offer him your complete loyalty.
