Recognizing God’s Holiness

Invitation to SELAH

Passage to Read

Isaiah 6:1-5:

It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. 2 Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 They were calling out to each other,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies!

The whole earth is filled with his glory!”

4 Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke.

5 Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

Reflect

It is one thing to have the idea that God is holy; it is another thing to recognize it and be impacted by the holiness of God. Isaiah was a prophet in the Old Testament. The passage you just read is one of the most important visions that he had throughout his ministry. Isaiah looked into heaven and saw God sitting on His throne. The description is impressive—a lofty throne, the train of his robe, attended by angelic creatures—but what matters most is the phrase that these angels were crying out over and over again. “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. The whole earth is filled with glory.” (NLT).

Of all the descriptive words the angels could have used, the best thing they could muster up was the unmistakable recognition of God’s holiness. We sing songs about God’s holiness, but have you been struck by how powerful it is that God is holy? When Isaiah got a single glimpse of God’s holiness, he was convinced that he would die because of how sinful he was. Today we want you to not just know the definition of holiness, but to recognize, witness, and be utterly amazed at God’s holiness. Is there something that needs to change in how you think about God? Is there something standing in the way of your recognition of God’s holiness?
