The Value of Rules

You may remember a list of classroom rules posted on a wall or written on a chalkboard the first day of school. Classroom rules made for an organized and civilized environment; they provided structure and safety so that we were able to listen and learn. They provided some of our earliest understanding about rewards and consequences; we experienced the joy of achievement and affirmation when we obeyed and the sting of discipline when we disobeyed.

As we grew up, the lessons we learned in school helped us to appreciate the value of rules and to establish some rules of our own in our homes, workplaces, and relationships. Rules act as an instruction manual on how to function in an environment and make the most of each day, opportunity, and relationship. We should view rules as the map towards our profit and protection rather than depriving us of something we think we want or deserve. In the Bible, commands are connected to our abundance, joy, and “that it may be well with you.”

Think about times of obedience and disobedience in your life. What emotions and consequences did you experience? How was your obedience rewarded? What demise could have come to you that you can see now but could not even imagine at the time of your decision? If you have not thanked Jesus for that protection and strength, thank Him now.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for giving me your instructions for the best life I can possibly live. Thank you for the protection and provision in my life that they offer. Thank you for loving me and teaching me how to get the most out of the life you have given me. I want to give you honor and glory. I want to show my love for you through my trust and obedience. Thank you for the teachers and mentors in my past who helped teach me the value of rules; may I always see your reflection in them.

The 5 R’s: Lessons We Value From Educators Beyond The Classroom

Educators taught you so much more than the 3 R’s of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.  The values at the core of your character may reflect the lessons you learned from educators—teachers, coaches, mentors, and parents—who were rooted in God’s Word. In this five-day devotional, join Kathy Branzell, author of An Apple a Day , and revisit the 5 R’s we learned from some of our favorite educators that added value to our lives well beyond our school years.
