Is Coronavirus a Judgment from God?Sample

  Our world has been hit with a global pandemic – coronavirus – leading many to ask: Is the coronavirus God’s judgment on the world? Is God bringing this upon us to lead people to repentance? Could this be the beginning of the end?

9-11. Hurricane Katrina. Coronavirus. It seems that every time we face a disaster, some religious leaders take to the airwaves to proclaim that it is God’s judgment upon the world. According to them, God was angry at New York City, then New Orleans, and now the whole world. 

Does this view really hold up? Let’s take a brief look at the truth about God and coronavirus.

 What God Wants

God’s goal isn’t to kill people or make them sick as a judgment for sin or to force them to listen to Him. No, He is seeking to save anyone and everyone who will call upon His name (Romans 10:13). Here’s what the Apostle Peter wrote about God’s agenda in the world today:

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

God is not wishing for anyone to die. He wants everyone to come to repentance. The Apostle Paul expressed it this way:

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Tim. 2:3-4

What About Repentance?

Still, we might be tempted to think, “Maybe God brought the coronavirus upon us to drive more people toward repentance.” But here’s what God’s Word says about how God really leads people to repentance:

Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:4

Notice that it is the kindness of the Lord that brings people to repentance. God is not trying to threaten or scare people into repentance. No, it is God’s goodness that leads people to Him, and it is the grace of God that teaches people to say “no” to sin (Titus 2:11-12).
