Is Coronavirus a Judgment from God?

DAY 6 OF 7

When the Day of Judgment comes, we believers can eagerly await it, knowing that God will not refer to our sins.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” John 5:24

Remember, God already took away our sins as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). He remembers them no more (Hebrews 10:17).

And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. Hebrews 9:27-28

Notice here, by the way, that judgment comes after death, not before. That matters when so many are claiming that coronavirus is God’s judgment upon people before their death. According to the author of Hebrews, that is not the case!

When the Day of Judgment comes for us, believers can have complete confidence. God’s perfect love casts away all our fear.

By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. 1 John 4:17-18

As believers, we can be excited about that day. John writes that we have nothing to worry about. We can be fully assured that we are as safe as Jesus at the final judgment.

Fallen World. Sovereign God.

If God did not bring the coronavirus as judgment on the world, then where did it come from? If you’ve lived a day on this planet, you’ve probably already noticed the terrible things that happen every day. Accidents and violence, rape, murder and hate. They happen every day in this fallen world, but God is not the author of any of those things.

God is not the author of sin and death, nor is He the author of disease and suffering. God is the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). God does not cause all things, but He does cause all things to work together for good for those that love Him (Romans 8:28).

Doesn’t God’s sovereignty come into play here? If we simply blame the coronavirus and any other bad thing on the fallen world, aren’t we threatening God’s sovereignty? Those questions can be addressed with more even questions. Think about these:

Was God’s sovereignty threatened when Satan rebelled? Was God’s sovereignty threatened when Adam and Eve sinned against Him? Is God’s sovereignty threatened each time people all over the Earth choose to sin?

Of course not! That would be a pathetic view of God’s sovereignty!

God created angels and humans with a choice. Because His sovereignty is not threatened, He created people with the freedom to love Him or rebel against Him. That’s what true love is all about – having a choice to respond.

Consider this: Which God is more sovereign – the one who must control our every move lest His authority and plan be threatened? Or the one who reigns supreme and whose plan is not thwarted by our choices?
