The Neighbourhood as Told by MatthewSample
Have you ever found yourself in an uncertain situation that was completely out of your control? As a child, whenever I would face a difficulty that led me to feel unsure or scared, my parents would assure me that I was not alone, for Jesus’ spirit was living in my heart and He was always with me.
We will inevitably face challenges in life whether in the workplace, in our relationships or perhaps struggles with finances. But as Christian's, we can rejoice knowing that we do not need to live in fear, because we are never alone. God sent the Holy Spirit, the Helper to guide us. When challenging circumstances arise, we must rebuke fear, anxiety and doubt and instead, tune in to His voice, for He will give us courage and strength.
In Matthew 10, Jesus speaks to His disciples, and explains that they will be opposed, persecuted and beaten, all for doing miracles in Jesus’ name and sharing the gospel of Christ to the neighbourhood.
Can you imagine how terrifying this must have been? The disciples were willing to follow the call of God, despite the terrible persecution they would face. In Matthew 10:19-20, Jesus reassures them, ‘But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.’
In this passage, Jesus commands the disciples not to worry and instead urges them to approach the situation with confidence and trust. Jesus was reminding the disciples where their authority and power came from, and that the Holy Spirit was with them.
As a community, we can be encouraged knowing that we are never alone. Even in the darkest, most uncertain moments, God is in control and the Holy Spirit is with us, guiding, leading and teaching us.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that no matter what challenges I face, You are with me and because of Your love for me, I do not need to fear. Please help me to turn my eyes to You in all situations. Please tune my ears so I can clearly hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in my life. In Your precious name I pray, Amen.
