Walking With Jesus

DAY 8 OF 40

This week we are diving into the gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) of the Last Supper. You may think of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting or you may have a lot of knowledge about what the Bible says about the Last Supper. I know God is going to teach us new truths about this passage over the next 7 days.

Today we will start with reading through a practice called Lectio Divina (literally divine reading). Too often we (Pastor’s like myself) have a tendency to say so much that you can miss out on what the Holy Spirit wants to say specifically to you. Open your heart and mind to the text as you take in the passage through 4 steps. Be sure to set aside 15-30 minutes for today’s reading. I will guide you every step of the way. It may become a common practice you use in reading scripture in the future like it has been for me. Here we go.

First of all, take a few minutes to calm your mind from all of the other distractions that are pulling at you. Simply say, “God, help me clear my mind so I can hear from you.”

Step 1 is Lectio (meaning read). READ Mark 12:14-26 as a way to get to know what is happening in the passage. What words or phrases jump out at you? Don’t force it. Let God guide you as you read.

Step 2 is Meditatio (meaning meditate). Read the same passage and focus further on what stood out to you the first time, or what stood out this time. Don’t analyze or study it, just read and MEDITATE and reflect on where God is nudging you.

Step 3 is Oratio (meaning respond). After a 3rd reading it’s time to RESPOND. Journal or think through what God is teaching you. What stood out and how will you apply it to your life?

Step 4 is Contemplacio (rest). This is the most difficult step. Spend time RESTING in silent contemplation. Sit quietly and allow God to work. You may have to re-direct your thinking to a word that stood out to you. Say that word each time your mind wanders.

I’m glad you got to experience this ancient practice of being guided through scripture. Be sure to share what God spoke to you in the “talk it over” section.

Daily Challenge: You did it! Way to take some extra time and go through the beautiful process of Lectio Divina.
