A verse a day keeps the old self away
Welcome to WEEK TWO! Over the next 7 days, we're going to be looking at how God changes our behaviours and actions to realign with His character and values [Rom 12:2]. The Bible calls this 'sanctification'; a process that will continually happen over your whole life, as you grow to become more like Jesus.
I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the saying; ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’? It’s an old phrase that suggests if you eat the right food, you’ll remain healthy and won’t need to see a doctor. Although the health results of this principle are questionable, it’s not a bad way to describe what the Bible calls, sanctification. As we consume God’s word, worship and pray, our mind becomes renewed to His way [Rom 12:2], and over time we say goodbye to our old self, habits and addictions.
In the books of Romans and James, the Bible gives a two-step guide on how followers of Jesus can renew their mind:
- Step 1: Romans talks about how faith comes from hearing the Word of God [Rom 10:17].
- Step 2: James talks about how faith without works is dead [James 2:26].
These two verses indicate that renewing your mind first starts with reading the Word of God (the Bible), but then taking that knowledge and practically outworking it in your life. In doing so, this will align your thoughts and actions to be more in line with God’s way of thinking and acting. Resulting in you becoming more like Christ.
PRAYER
Jesus, thank You that You chose to enter into my mess and want to help me fix it. As I read Your Word, highlight any of my actions and mindsets that don’t align with Yours, and show me how I can become more like You and renew my mind. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
