The Road to Christmas

DAY 5 OF 10

It’s All In The Details

In the Bible, there are many prophecies about the birth of Jesus. Each one reveals something interesting and often unique about the birth of the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. When layered on top of each other, an amazing list of circumstances begins to appear – a checklist for the Jewish people that would help them to know the Messiah had finally come.

Luke 2:1–7 is rich with details. From the name of Caesar Augustus, to the lineage of Joseph, this passage of scripture leaves no stone unturned. That’s what makes it so profound. With each sentence, Luke ticks another thing off the list. With each sentence, he is confirming and reinforcing that the long-awaited and prayed for Messiah has, in fact, finally, come.

You can imagine the excitement of the reader, ‘Could this be?’ getting louder in their heads as each sentence confirms the fulfilment of the thing that they, and generations before them, had been waiting for.

No wonder Luke is so specific about the details – they really do matter.

‘… and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger.’ This was it. The prophecies surrounding the birth of the long-awaited Jewish Messiah had been fulfilled. Now what?

How the word became flesh, the virgin teenager who became the mother of our Saviour King, her husband’s wrestle with heart and mind, the birth of their son, the one who would rescue us all, the prophesies of Anna and Simeon, the heartbreak of a nation and the Saviour King becoming a refugee.
