The Priority Shuffle
Have you ever been asked, "What's your number one priority?” And then sit there asking yourself that very question? Only to realize that what’s at the top of your list one moment may sink to the bottom the next. We all have that ever-changing tide of circumstances that flow daily in and out of our lives.
Imagine you're at work, dealing with something needing to be finished that day, and it’s your number one priority. Then the phone rings; your child's school tells you your child is hurt or sick, and you must come immediately. Your priorities have changed, haven't they? What was incredibly critical one minute isn’t even thought about the next.
Some people will tell you what their number one priority is, but in reality, it's their number one worry. It’s what they think about constantly. Do you ever find yourself having a "struggle with the juggle?” Trying to keep all of life's competing and ever-changing priorities up in the air so they don't come crashing down?
The truth is that God's interested in the smallest details of your life, and His word says that He holds you in the palm of His hand. Perhaps the Father wants you to do something contrary to your nature, inclination, and culture: “drop the ball."
Realize that “Dropping the Ball” means your priorities fall into His hands and care. Ultimately, it's about trusting Him with the priorities of your life. It could be that your priorities will shift significantly when you make it a priority to start your day with Him and realize that you weren't just created for a relationship; you were created for fellowship!
In Proverbs 8, God said, "When you seek me early, you find me." It's His invitation for you to begin your day with Him. The Father wants involvement. It’s so much better when you allow Him at the beginning of the day to plan your day than asking Him at the end of the day to fix your day!
Reflection: Can you see areas of your life where you’ve allowed your priorities to shift? Why not take this moment to write out a list of your top 5 and then watch it to see if and how long they stay stable or fluctuate?
