The Preview

"For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed” (John 5:20, NIV).

The word “amazed,” or related terms such as marvel, awe, astonishment, and wonder, appear frequently in the New Testament. In the gospels, the words are generally associated with the teachings and miracles of Jesus. Words and actions, he said, would become “greater,” causing people to be amazed. Creating a sense of astonishment at who Jesus is, in the hopes that people will believe (to trust in or rely upon Jesus). And what has occurred in the past hasn’t ended. The “greater works” the Lord began two thousand years ago continue today all around the world.

Along with fostering belief, those who follow Christ will experience moments of amazement as the Lord works in, through, and around them. And this desire to “amaze” isn’t solely for pastors, evangelists, teachers, and missionaries. The Father wants all His children to know and experience Him in astonishing ways. Therefore, I pray that this plan will encourage us with at least three things.

First, by God’s grace, may we develop a deeper sense of admiration and wonder for the Lord Jesus and who he is. Second, may it reinforce the truth that God is still working today, and he wants to use you and me. And third, may the next thirty days remind you of the “amazing” moments you’ve already encountered in your relationship with Christ. May those moments create a sense of gratitude and anticipation. The latter, because what the Lord has done in your past, he can do in your future in similar or different ways.

A final introductory note. This plan highlights the claims and works of Christ, done in unison with His Father. Concerning that, it’s essential to acknowledge the role of the Holy Spirit. Although he has limited mention in this plan, his active role and participation in the "greater works" deserve recognition. That said, our journey begins with an amazing, but unwelcome miracle.
