DAY 4 OF 30

Only the Beginning

After Jesus said that he only does what he sees his Father doing, he then informs his listeners (and us) that greater works were coming. "For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed” (John 5:20, NIV). The pinnacle of these “greater works” would be Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection. Along with his ascension and the arrival of the Holy Spirit, these “greater works” would be the basis for what he would do during his life and beyond. Furthermore, these would not only substantiate his claims but also lead to widespread amazement.

When Jesus made these claims, they had yet to be confirmed, which raises a question. What did his disciples think? Given the reaction of the religious leaders and the seriousness of their opposition, did any of them begin wondering what they had signed up for? At the time, they didn’t have the “full story” like we do. We have history to look back on. We can examine the evidence that’s been recorded and passed down for years, confirming the truth of Jesus’ claims. Not so for his followers at the time. They would have to faithfully “wait and see” if these greater works and subsequent claims would validate Jesus’ words.

While the Lord’s disciples had already witnessed his miraculous capacities, Jesus’ words may have caused some uncertainty. To believe he was the Messiah was plausible, but to hear Jesus assert equality with God might have presented a challenge. To their credit, and by the grace of God, most held fast and eventually became eyewitnesses to these greater works. Works that one day they’d be empowered to do as well.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the faith of your early followers. By your grace, please help me remain faithful throughout my life. Amen.

About this Plan

Amazed

In John 5, after Jesus heals a man at the pool of Bethesda, he then declared that greater works would occur, causing people to be amazed. Over the next thirty days, this plan by Dr. P. J. Meduri from Taking the Field Ministries will explore the claims of Christ regarding these greater works. Works he continues today through his followers.
